Cable line transition tower damages
One of the weak points of cable lines is cable joints and terminations. Despite all the efforts of specialists who develop and install the joints/terminations, there are still many damages. The consequences of damage will vary depending on the location features. There are at least the following typical locations:
1️⃣ Joints in the ground.
2️⃣ Joints in the manhole.
3️⃣ Terminations on the fenced territory of the switchgear.
4️⃣ Terminations at the transition point of the mixed line (cable/overhead).

For example, in option (2), there is a known situation when, at the moment of damage to the joint, the manhole lid flew off, leading to injuries to passers-by. In option (3), there are situations when fragments of termination damaged neighbouring equipment and even flew over the fence of the switchgear. Options (2) and (3) have already been discussed in previous posts. Today, let us talk a little bit about option (4).
There are many cases when cable sections are made on an overhead line, and it becomes necessary to make transition points. If we are talking about transition points on lines with a voltage of up to 220 kV, then cable terminations are most often placed not on the ground, but on so-called transition towers (poles) at height above the ground (on the crossarms). Surge arresters are also placed there, close to cable terminations.
In case of damage to the termination or its surge arrester, fragments of their structure may fall down, covering a land area of up to 100 m2 or more. The photo shows an example when even the whole termination fell down. Who do you think such a termination fell on?
Unfortunately, not all countries of the world are paying enough attention to the safety of members of society when making transitional towers (poles). This is especially true for towers located in populated areas where a damage to the terminations or their surge arresters can lead to serious consequences.
Recommendations are simple:
✅ Designers of transition towers (poles) should consider safety issues.
✅ Members of society should stay away from transition towers (poles), realizing the absolute reality of the threat to health and life.
By the way, a new brochure on surge arresters is available.
