How can we increase the explosion safety of cable terminations?
Earlier, I posted some photos showing that the surge arrester (SA), in case of its damage, can pose a danger to the equipment placed nearby. But what about consequences in case of damage of cable termination or cable joint?
There are some examples of what we can get for 110 kV:
1️⃣ cable termination mounted in the switchgear – please look at the photos presented (as far as I know, the car was parked very far away).
2️⃣ cable joint mounted inside the concrete well – please revise previous post.
Modern cable termination/joint is certainly a good reliable equipment, however, there is no way to exclude the situation when some of them will damage. In case of damage, there is a sufficient risk for nearby equipment. This risk for nearby equipment is many times higher compared to the risk in the case of SA damage.
SA manufacturers have been improving the design of their equipment for many decades, increasing the explosion safety of the structure. And what did the manufacturers of cable termination/joint do? Replacing porcelain with polymer is a good step, but is it enough?
