We still can’t mount cable terminations
Look at this example of installing HV cable terminations on the switchgear. In my opinion, there are several mistakes at once.
1️⃣ The lower flange of the termination must be at least 2.5 meters above the ground (this distance is determined by the height of the service personnel who raised his hand up). However, in the photo we are talking about a height of about 1.5-2.0 meters only, which is dangerous for personnel.
2️⃣ The cable must enter the termination from below and be coaxial with it at least in a 0.5 meter long section adjacent to the termination (this is necessary to eliminate internal stresses inside the termination and reduce the risk of short-circuit). However, in the photo we are talking about the fact that the cable begins bending almost immediately under the termination.
3️⃣ The cable cannot be laid on the ground surface, but must be placed in a tray or in a pipe, preferably underground (this is necessary to avoid mechanical damages or damages in case of a fire in the switchgear).
4️⃣ The wires connecting the cable screens to the link-box cannot hang out so freely, but must be secured (otherwise the personnel may stumble over them).
5️⃣ It seems that the terminations are installed too close to the power transformer, which on a hot day can complicate the cooling processes of cables. In addition, termination damage will be dangerous for the transformer exactly as vice versa – transformer damage will be dangerous for the termination and its cable (esepially in case of explosure and fire).
It’s a shame that we have already mastered cutting-edge green energy systems, but have not yet learned how to make conventional cable terminations.
